At our meeting for worship with a concern for business held on 6/3/2012, our minutes include an item relating to financial contributions to outside organizations. This question has come up repeatedly in our meeting and was the subject of several meetings for listening over the years, including:
The relevant minute from 6/3/2012 was:
Bethanne reported that the Peace and Social Concerns (P&SC) committee met and reviewed the outcome of the threshing session on Meeting contributions to outside organizations. The proposal from the P&SC Committee was read:
We propose that Patapsco Friends Meeting continue to support organizations which are part of members’ leadings (NAMI, Day Treatment Resource Center, etc.) through individual donations of money, time or goods. We also propose that Patapsco make annual financial contributions to the AFSC, FCNL, FGC, and the Friends Journal (FUM is another possibility) as symbolic gestures of support.
There was some discussion regarding the notes from the Threshing Session and what happens to these notes. Ken will post the notes on our website and asked if people objected to having the names included. There was some discussion about this and it was decided that just the first names will be posted. It was suggested that it would be good for there to be a personal involvement by people in the Meeting with agencies/organizations. Ken also suggested that a contribution might be made to BYM camps as another place for giving money. Jean suggested a Quaker organization fair once per year to acquaint all of our members with the work of these organizations. The following minute was approved:
Patapsco Friends Meeting wishes to continue to support organizations which are part of members’ leadings (NAMI, Day Treatment Resource Center, etc.) through individual donations of money, time or goods. Patapsco also wishes to make annual financial contributions to Quaker organizations such as the AFSC, FCNL, FGC, and the Friends Journal as symbolic gestures of support. We affirm that we want to maintain an awareness of each organization that we support financially and consider other ways we can support them.
